BENEFIT: Tawfīq & Khidhlān

Sheikh Salih Āl Ash-Shaykh ḥafidhahullāh states:
Tawfīq (Divine success) is the help and support that Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, grants to a servant in his affairs.
Khidhlān (deprivation and abandonment) occur when Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, withdraws this support from you in your affairs and leaves you to yourself. When a person is left to himself, he slips and falls.
For this reason, it is mentioned in the ḥadīth: “O Allāh, do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye.” Notice the phrase “the blink of an eye”—do not leave me to myself—because if you are left to yourself even for a moment, the foot will slip, Allāh forbid.
Thus, when a servant is deprived of tawfīq and is forsaken, this does not happen without causes. A servant is not deprived of tawfīq or abandoned except due to reasons. As Allāh says: “Whatever good befalls you is from Allāh, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself.”
Among the (consequences of) sins is being forsaken, and this can only occur because of something on your part. Among its causes are weakness in worship, weakness in turning toward Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, weakness in holding firmly to the Sunnah, weakness in adherence to knowledge, and weakness in following the guidance of the righteous predecessors. Another cause is when religion becomes a subject of disputes and arguments, and a matter of gossip and idle talk.
