Avoid Pursuing and Spreading News in Times of Fitnah Sheikh ’Abdussalām Ash-Shuwa’ir ḥafidhahullāh said: “Ibn Abī Zimneen Al-Mālikī—may Allāh have mercy on him—mentioned in his book Uṣūl As-Sunnah that Shurayḥ; who was a mukhaḍram; he lived during the time of the Prophet ﷺ but did not see him; ʿUmar—may Allāh be pleased with him—appointed him as a judge, and he was among the eminent Tābiʿīn; He was not the best of the Tābiʿīn—the best of the Tābiʿīn is Uways Al-Qaranī, as reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim—but he was among the best of the Tābiʿīn, may Allāh be pleased with him. Shurayḥ Al-Qāḍhi—may Allāh have mercy on him—used to say: “When Fitan arise, do not seek news of them, nor spread news about them.” That is, do not listen to reports so that harm reaches you, and do not relay such reports in matters of news, for they occupy your time and distract you with what causes you to lose knowledge. Sometimes lightening oneself of such matters brings Allāh’s blessing upon one’s time. Your time is very short, so always strive to reduce involvement in such things.
