The True Student of Knowledge
Al-Khatīb narrated in Al-Jāmi‘:
Abul-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Shadhi Al-Hamadhani came to us a pilgrim and narrated to us: Mansur ibn Abdillah Al-Harawi narrated to use in Hamadhan: I heard Abu Ubaydillah Al-Muqri’, in Makkah, say: ‘I heard my grandfather say: I heard Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah say:
«لَا يَكُونُ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْحَدِيثِ حَتَّى يَأْخُذَ عَمَّنْ فَوْقَهُ وَعَمَّنْ هُوَ دُونَهُ وَعَمَّنْ هُوَ مِثْلُهُ»
“A man cannot truly be considered among the people of hadith until he takes knowledge from:
1⃣. Those above him,
2⃣. Those below him, and
3⃣. Those equal to him.”
