BENEFIT: How to Strengthen Memorisation

7 December 2025 • 1.69K views
Sheikh ’Abdulḥamīd Az-Zu'kari hafidahullāh mentions the following means: 1. Practice, repetition, and consistency 2. Avoiding distractions – Distractions weaken memory and cause what is memorised to be forgotten. 3. Avoiding savoury foods 4. Consuming sweet foods in moderation – Sweet foods enhance memory because the brain’s primary fuel is glucose, which comes from sugars. 5. Du'a – Consider the example of Abu Hurairah, whom the Prophet ﷺ supplicated for. 6. Associating with those who memorise – Being around others who memorise increases one’s own capacity to retain knowledge. 7. Writing what is memorised – Writing reinforces retention, especially if one first memorises and then writes, either the text itself or its meaning. 8. Sufficient sleep – Excessive staying up at night weakens memory. 9. Avoiding engagement in unrelated matters – Although some flexibility may be allowed, focusing entirely on knowledge is ideal. Some scholars never occupied themselves with anything outside learning. 10. Avoiding sins – Sin clouds the heart, diminishes memory, and distracts the mind. As reported in the advice of Wakee‘: knowledge is a light, and the light of Allāh is not granted to a sinner. 11. Understanding what one intends to memorise – Memorising without understanding leads to frequent mistakes and difficulties. 12. Repetition – Continual review ensures that knowledge becomes firmly established. 13. Precision – Before beginning memorisation, whether from the Qur’an, Sunnah, or poetry, one should be able to recite the material accurately. 14. High ambition and determination 15. Choosing the appropriate time – Fatigue is not conducive to memorisation. 16. Avoiding sleep immediately after memorisation – Failing to review before sleeping may result in forgetting what was just memorised. 17. Regular revision – Memory requires consistent review; memorisation is incomplete without it. 18. Treating illnesses – Physical ailments can cause forgetfulness, as exemplified by Suhail ibn Abi Salih, who forgot due to illness. 19. Maintaining good health – A healthy body supports a sharp memory. 20. Choosing a suitable environment – Avoid noisy, distracting places. A quiet and focused setting, such as a mosque or private room, is ideal for memorisation. #tarbiyah@masjidsahabah https://t.me/masjidsahabah/1456
