Never Show Weakness to the Enemy
Sheikh Daghsh ibn Shabeeb Al-’Ajmi ḥafidhahullāh states:
Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān, the maternal uncle of the Believers, and one of the most astute men of the Arabs, when death approached him, said:
وَتَجَلُّدي لِلشامِتينَ أُريهِمُ * أَنّي لرَيبِ الدَهرِ لا أَتَضَعضَعُ
“And I harden myself before those who rejoice at my misfortune, showing them that, in the trials of fate, I do not waver.”
Displaying strength at the moment when your enemies expect you to show weakness—this is true shrewdness and this is wisdom. Sometimes a person is strong, yet when he faces his enemies he displays weakness and feebleness. This behaviour will not cause your enemies to sympathise with you; rather, you are obliged to show strength before them.
Do not show people that you are poor; instead, show them that you are rich, that you are strong, that you are capable, that you are not helpless, and that you are not in need of your enemy. For the more you display weakness, the more the enemy will overstep boundaries against you, and the more it will become a cause for your enemy’s joy.
Do not think that if you show yourself to be weak, your enemy will sympathise with you or weep for you—never. Rather, that will be the day of his happiness and delight. Therefore, we must always show our strength to our adversaries, and never display weakness before those who oppose us.
