Question: What are some of the legislated ways to benefit the deceased? Answer: Even after our loved ones have passed on, there are various legislated ways to continue benefitting them. Here are some deeds that reach them as ongoing rewards (sadaqah jāriyah): 1. Sincere supplication is one of the greatest gifts you can offer them. 2. Settle their debts (including unpaid zakāh). 3. Give charity on their behalf Examples include: - Feeding the poor and needy - Building a masjid, orphanage, or hospital - Digging a well or water source - Helping a righteous person get married - Sponsoring a student of knowledge - Printing beneficial Islamic books or establishing a library - Distributing copies of the Muṣḥaf where they’ll be used often 4. If they missed fasting due to valid reasons, you may fast on their behalf. 5. Perform Hajj or ‘Umrah for them 6. Include them in your Udhḥiyah (Sacrificial Animal) These actions not only honour their memory but also earn you reward — a win for both in this life and the Next, in shā’ Allāh.
