Question:
What is the proper depth of a grave?
Answer:
Scholars have differed regarding the appropriate depth of a grave. Some recommend digging it to the measure of a “qamūṣ basṭā,” which is defined as the depth reached when an average-height man stands in the grave and raises his hands above his head. Others suggest a depth up to the navel. While varying opinions exist, there is no definitive text prescribing an exact measurement.
Thus, the depth of a grave is flexible and should consider the nature of the soil—whether hard or soft—as well as the need to protect the deceased from disturbance by wild animals and to prevent the spread of any unpleasant odours that may cause harm or discomfort. Observing these practical considerations is sufficient.

Question:
Once the body is rested in the grace, is the face uncovered?
Answer:
There is no evidence to uncover the face of the deceased in the grave. Rather, what's apparent is that all parts of the body should remain covered, whether the deceased is male or female, except in the case of someone who dies in a state of Ihram, as there is specific evidence regarding this exception.
It is reported in the hadith of Ibn Abbas concerning a man whose camel trampled him and he died: the Prophet ﷺ instructed: "Wash him with water and sidr, and shroud him in a cloth, but do not cover his head, for he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection proclaiming the Talbiyah." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Thus, the head of a muhrim male should not be covered. As for women, their heads should be covered, whether they are in a state of Ihram or not.
However, before burial, it is permissible to uncover the face temporarily, for example, to kiss the deceased, as Abu Bakr (may Allāh be pleased with him) did with the face of the Prophet ﷺ. In this case, uncovering the face is allowed while the deceased is still outside the grave, after which the covering should be returned to its place.
