What is the proper method for shrouding the deceased — are men and women shrouded the same way?
Answer:
The recommended practice is that the deceased, whether male or female, should be shrouded in three white garments.
This is based on the hadith of ʿAishah (may Allāh be pleased with her), who said: “The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was shrouded in three white Yemeni garments made of cotton, with no shirt or turban.” [Al-Bukhārī and Muslim]
Therefore, the evidence indicates that a woman is shrouded in the same manner as a man. Some scholars have suggested that a woman should be shrouded in five pieces — a waist wrapper, a headcover, a shirt, and two additional wraps. However, there is no clear evidence supporting this distinction.
Note: Shrouding the deceased is an act of honour and respect. The Prophet ﷺ said: “When one of you shrouds his brother, let him do it well” [Muslim]. At the same time, extravagance should be avoided.
Step-by-Step Procedure for Shrouding:
1. Lay three kafan sheets one on top of another, placing the widest sheet at the bottom.
2. After washing (ghusl) and drying, gently place the body onto the shroud on its back.
3. Lightly apply camphor or musk to the body, especially the sujūd points — forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes.
4. Wrap the body carefully starting with the uppermost sheet, then the next sheet, and then the final sheet. Fold the sides over the body in the same manner, ensuring full coverage from head to feet.
5. Gather and tie the ends of the shroud above the head and below the feet, using just enough tension to hold it securely.
6. The body is now ready for the funeral prayer.
7. Once the body is placed in the grave, the ties may be removed.
And Allāh knows best.
