Sheikh ’Abdussalām Ash-Shuwa'ir ḥafidhahullāh said:
"You must not cut yourself off from knowledge. You should have a regular portion of the Qur'ān [that you regularly recite], and a regular portion of the lessons of the scholars [that you regularly attend]. Do not abandon them—do not abandon them. One of the brothers said: “I pledged to my shaykh that nothing would separate me from his lesson except death or incapacity.” One of us may become incapable, but until then we must continue. I remember, in earlier times, the shaykhs would have people attending their lessons who were sixty or seventy years old; they did not abandon the lessons. And even now, I know some people who continue to attend their shaykh’s lesson while being over sixty-five years of age, and they have been reading to their shaykh for forty years without interruption.
The student may have reached a position in the university far higher than that of his shaykh, yet because he began with his shaykh, he never cut off from him. This is an example of humility in knowledge and reverence for it. Believe me, Allāh Almighty places in the hearts of people a veneration for the one who humbles himself in acquiring knowledge with his shaykh—far greater than what he may imagine, for he may think it to be a kind of belittlement, while in reality it is the opposite.
Let us return to our first point:
1⃣ Set for yourself a portion of lessons—do not abandon them.
2⃣ Set for yourself a portion of the Qur'ān—do not abandon it.
3⃣ Set for yourself a portion of reading—do not abandon it.
4⃣ Set for yourself a portion of revision—do not abandon it.
These are daily devotions that you must never cut off. These four matters—do not cut them off to the best of your ability. And along with that, emphasise them greatly by constantly supplicating to Allāh Almighty that He grant you beneficial knowledge.
