Responding to Harmful Words
If someone’s words hurts you, and you find some truth in them, accept it graciously, thank the speaker, and pay no attention to whether their intention was good or ill. Wisdom is the lost property of the believer; one takes it wherever it may be found.
If, however, the words are false and entirely without merit, examine their source and respond with gentleness, for they may have arisen from misunderstanding or limited perception.
Avoid rushing to reply; stirring a fruitless statement only amplifies its noise, whereas leaving it be allows its impact to fade and its sting to disappear.
Seek the counsel of the wise; if they advise silence, follow it, for there is dignity in restraint, and safety in heeding their guidance.
Should others rise to defend you, consider it a grace surpassing all beauty, and a light that spares you the need for any apology.
