#LIFE_LESSONS How To Deal with Desires Desire has no solution except patience or fulfilling it through lawful means. But what is the solution when lawful means are not available? If a person surrenders to fulfilling it unlawfully, he will never find satisfaction. He will always feel anxiety, remorse, and guilt, which will leave him sorrowful and depressed. Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allāh have mercy on him) said: «وليعلم اللّبيب أن مدمني الشّهوات يصيرون إلى حالة لا يلتذّون بها وهم مع ذلك لا يستطيعون تركها». "The intelligent should know that those who are addicted to desires reach a state where they no longer find pleasure in them, yet they still cannot abandon them." [Rawdat Al-Muhibbin wa Nuzhat Al-Mushtaqin, 1/470] This is a psychological state experienced even by those who engage in sinful practices, such as the evil habit of masturbation, regardless of whether they are Muslims or not. So, what is the way forward? The solution lies in the words of Allah Almighty: “Do not approach fornication. Indeed, it is ever an abomination and an evil way.” [Al-Isrā', 32] Notice that Allah did not say, “Do not commit fornication” but rather, “Do not approach it.” This is miraculous guidance. Do not approach anything that leads to fornication: — videos — channels — images — places Today, we live in a world flooded with pornography. The pornography industry generates tens of billions of dollars, infiltrating our homes, devices, and even our so-called smart and dumb phones. It has corrupted the prayers of believers and turned many people into beings chasing after their lusts. It has broken the spirit of the believer and wounded the pure natural disposition (fitrah). This disease afflicts both men and women equally. It is one of the most dangerous wars of our time, for it creeps into our bedrooms and even into our children’s lives without us noticing. It destroys our souls if we are not vigilant. And we cannot simply escape it, because it is everywhere. Is marriage the solution? Unfortunately…not entirely. Even some married individuals suffer from the same problem, and many marriages have been destroyed because of it. The only refuge is fortification with the shield of piety and fear of Allāh, along with a firm decision to quit. ✔️ Take a decisive stand to stop. ✔️ Resolve not to use your device except in front of your family and in shared spaces, never alone in your private room. 🌺 “And those who guard their private parts…” [Al-Mu’minun, 5] This Āyah does not only mean avoiding fornication but also avoiding everything that leads to it. ✔️ It is a war with no room for surrender — even if you lose one battle or several. ✔️ Do not isolate yourself, for Shayṭān accompanies a person in solitude and only withdraws when one is among others. ✔️ Neither pornography, nor self-indulgence, nor unlawful relationships can truly satisfy these natural human needs outside the framework set by Allāh Almighty. ✔️ The most precious possession of a human being is the heart, and such scenes tear it apart.
