The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ stood and addressed us at a watering place called Khumm, between Makkah and Madīnah. He praised and glorified Allāh, and he exhorted and reminded us, then he said: ((...أذكركم الله في أهل بيتي، أذكركم الله في أهل بيتي، أذكركم الله في أهل بيتي)) “...I remind you of Allāh in (upholding your duties) towards my family! I remind you of Allāh regarding my family! I remind you of Allāh regarding my family! (three times)” [Reported by Muslim] 4. Ahlus-Sunnah are the foremost to honour the commandments of the Prophet ﷺ, including the one above; and at the forefront of Ahlus-Sunnah are the two noble companions; Abū Bukr and 'Umar Ibnul Khaṭṭāb. Abū Bakr may Allāh be pleased with him said: والذي نفسي بيده لقرابة رسول الله ﷺ أحب إلي أن أصل من قرابتي "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, it is more beloved to me that I maintain the ties of the Prophet ﷺ than maintain my own ties." [Bukhāri] He also said: ارقبوا محمدا ﷺ في أهل بيته "Show reverence to Muhammad (ﷺ) by honouring his family members." [Bukhāri] Similarly, 'Umar said to Al-'Abbās; the Prophet's uncle: والله لإسلامك يوم أسلمت كان أحب الي من إسلام الخطاب لو أسلم "I swear by Allāh, your Islām the day you embraced it, is more beloved to me than the Islām of Al-Khaṭṭāb, had he embraced Islām." [Tafsīr of Ibn Kathīr] Meaning, the Prophet's uncle embracing Islām was more beloved to him than his own father embracing Islām; had he embraced it. That is because of their great love and respect for the family of the Prophet ﷺ. 5. Ahlus-Sunnah love Ahlul-Bayt based on their faith and piety - not only because of their relation to the Prophet ﷺ, hence why their love does not extend to the disbelievers from amongst them - even if they are closely related to the Prophet ﷺ; like Abū Lahab, Abū Ṭālib, etc. Rather, they have hatred for them due to their Shirk & Kufr. 6. But despite their love and respect for Ahlul-bayt, Ahlus Sunnah do not go to extremes; they do not declare them to be infallible, like the Rāfiḍhah on one extreme, nor do they stand against Ahlul-Bayt, hating and slandering them, like the Nāṣibah on the other extreme. 7. Ahlus Sunnah do not rely on their lineage, because a person's lineage is of no benefit to him if he is short of good deeds. It comes in the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, reported by Muslim, that the Prophet ﷺ said: ((من بطأ به عمله لم يسرع به نسبه)) "He who falls behind due to a lack of good deeds, his noble lineage will not bring him forward." Meaning: his lineage will not intercede for him. Therefore, a Muslim must strive to do good, righteous actions, and if Allāh decreed for him to be from Ahlul Bayt, then this is light upon light, but he must never rely on that! _________________ This is the belief of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamā'ah with regards to Ahlul-Bayt.
