EXPLANATION OF THE LĀMIYYAH OF IBN TAYMIYYAH (https://t.me/madrasatuna) We continue on from where we left off last lesson; that is the author's saying: وَمَـوَدَّةُ الْـقُـرْبَـى بِـهَـا أَتَـوَسَّـلُ And through loving the nearest ones (Ahlul-Bayt) do I seek nearness (to Allāh) 1. Here, the author expresses his love for the family of the Prophet ﷺ (Ahlul-bayt) and says that through this love he seeks to draw closer to Allāh ﷻ. This is the second matter of belief comprised in this poem: BELIEF 2: ʟᴏᴠɪɴɢ ᴀʜʟᴜʟ ʙᴀʏᴛ, ʜᴏɴᴏᴜʀɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ʀɪɢʜᴛs ᴀɴᴅ ʜᴏʟᴅɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ ɪɴ ʜɪɢʜ ᴇsᴛᴇᴇᴍ - ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ɢᴏɪɴɢ ᴛᴏ ᴇxᴛʀᴇᴍᴇs. 2. Who are Ahlul-Bayt? Ahlul-Bayt (the Prophetic household) refers to those people who are not allowed to accept charity; just as the Prophet ﷺ said: ((إِنَّ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَاتِ إِنَّمَا هِيَ أَوْسَاخُ النَّاسِ، وَإِنَّهَا لاَ تَحِلُّ لِمُحَمَّدٍ وَلاَ لآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ)) "Verily, these ṣadaqāt (forms of charity) are the impurities of people, and they are not permissible for Muḥammad (ﷺ), nor the family of Muḥammad." [Reported by Muslim] This definition includes: (a) the wives of the Prophet ﷺ as well as his offsprings (b) the descendents of Hāshim ibn 'Abdi-Manāf (c) the descendents of Al-Muṭṭalib ibn 'Abdi-Manāf (d) and their freed slaves. NOTE: Primarily, Ahlul-Bayt are comprised of the descendents of Hāshim ibn 'Abdi-Manāf (reflect over the ḥadīth of Wāthilah Ibnul Asqa’ below). As for the other categories, then they have been included due to one of three secondary reasons; marriage (as is the case with the wives of the Prophet ﷺ), allegiance (as is the case with Al-Muṭṭalib and his descendents), or emancipation. In any case, all of them are prohibited from accepting charity. 3. Allāh has honoured Ahlul Bayt and given them a noble distinction. (1) Allāh ﷻ said: {إِنَّمَا یُرِیدُ اللهُ لِیُذۡهِبَ عَنكُمُ ٱلرِّجۡسَ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡبَیۡتِ وَیُطَهِّرَكُمۡ تَطۡهِیرࣰا} "Allah only intends to keep ˹the causes of˺ evil away from you and purify you completely, O Ahlul-Bayt!" [Sūrat Al-Ahzāb 33] (2) Allāh has enjoined that blessings be sent upon them alongside His Messenger ﷺ: {یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ صَلُّوا۟ عَلَیۡهِ وَسَلِّمُوا۟ تَسۡلِیمًا} "O believers! Invoke Allāh’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace." [Sūrat Al-Ahzāb 56] Narrated Ka`b ibn 'Ujrah: Once the Prophet ﷺ came out to us and we said, 'O Allāh's Messenger (ﷺ)! We know how to salute you with worthy greetings of peace; but how do we invoke Allāh's blessings upon you? He said, 'Say: ((اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ)) "O Allāh, send prayer upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent prayers upon the family of Ibrāhīm; You are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory. And send blessings upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrāhīm; You are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory”. (3) Allāh has allocated to them a share of the khums [one-fifth of the spoils of war (refer to Sūrat Al-Anfāl 41)] and fay’ [one-fifth of spoils that is captured without any fighting (refer to Sūrat Al-Hashr 7)] (4) Wāthilah Ibnul Asqa’ narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: ((إن الله اصطفى كنانة من ولد اسماعيل واصطفى قريشا من كنانة واصطفى من قريش بني هاشم واصطفاني من بني هاشم)) “Allāh, glorified and Exalted is He, chose Kinānah from among the children of Ismā’īl (peace be upon him), and He chose Quraysh from among Kinānah, and He chose Banū Hāshim from among Quraysh, and He chose me from among Banū H āshim.” [Reported by Muslim] (5) Charity is a form of purification which cleanses a person from impurities. Allāh has prohibited Ahlul-Bayt from accepting charity in order to honour them and demonstrate that they are above accepting people's impurities.
