عَضَّ (يَعَضُّ عَضّاً/عَضِيضاً) [أمسكه بأسنانه وشدَّ عليه] [Verb] To bite Example sentence 1⃣: عَضِضْتُ لِسَانِي I bit my tongue. Example sentence 2⃣ (from Qur'ān): {وَيَوْمَ يَعَضُّ ٱلظَّالِمُ عَلَىٰ يَدَيْهِ يَقُولُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى ٱتَّخَذْتُ مَعَ ٱلرَّسُولِ سَبِيلًا} “On that Day the evildoer will bite his own hand and say, ‘If only I had taken the same path as the Messenger.” [Sūrah Al-Furqān 27] Note: عض على يديه / أنامله expresses the meaning of regret Example sentence 3⃣ (from Sunnah): ((فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ الْمَهْدِيِّينَ، عَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ)). “Stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Khulafā Ar-Rāshidīn (the rightly guided caliphs), those who guide to the right way. Bite onto it with your molar teeth.” Note: عض على الشيء بالناوجذ expresses the meaning of clinging onto something stubbornly.
