41. Whoever Memorises Forty Hadiths
Question:
A brother asks about the hadith:
((من حفظَ على أُمَّتِي أربعينَ حديثا من أَمرِ دِينِها بعثهُ اللهُ يومَ القيامةِ من العلماءِ))
“Whoever memorises forty hadiths of my Ummah that are beneficial for their religion will be raised on the Day of Judgment among the scholars,” and he mentions its chain of narration from Shuʿab Al-Īmān by Al-Bayhaqī.
Sheikh Rashad Adh-Dhali'ee:
This hadith has many chains of transmission, but all of them are weak. Scholars use it as an example that when a hadith has many chains but each one is very weak, they do not strengthen each other.
They said this hadith has many routes, but all of them are weak, and the weakness is too severe for them to support one another.
However, many scholars still acted upon this hadith and wrote works based on the idea of “forty hadiths,” which is why you find many collections of forty hadiths in different fields. Many scholars hoped for its reward, even though the hadith itself is weak. [https://t.me/madrasatuna/6100]
Conclusion:
I praise Allah, by whose favour every righteous deed is completed.
This marks the conclusion of this humble compilation, which I have now chosen to title:
الأربعون البراوية في النصوص الشرعية
In the introduction, I mentioned that this book would be completed within forty days from the date of its preface. However, I have finished it earlier than that in order to reduce any undue focus on the number forty.
Likewise, I have included this final hadith—despite its weakness—to remind myself and the reader of the purpose behind scholars compiling such collections, and to further discourage attaching significance to the number forty itself. The number forty carries no special virtue, so one should not be preoccupied with it.
Finally, I acknowledge that most of the brief commentaries included beneath the hadiths have been benefitted from the Durar As-Saniyyah website.
Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise. There is no diety worthy of worship but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.
