Forty Years of Burning Pain from One Bite عن عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ جَزْءٍ الزُّبَيْدِيَّ، صَاحِبَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، يَقُولُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: ((إِنَّ فِي النَّارِ لَحَيَّاتٌ مِثْلُ أَعْنَاقِ الْبُخْتِ يَلْسَعْنَ أَحَدَهُمُ اللَّسْعَةَ فَيَجِدُ حَمْوَهَا أَرْبَعِينَ خَرِيفًا)). Narrated ʿAbdullāh ibn Al-Ḥārith ibn Jazʾ Az-Zubaydī, a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “In the Fire there are snakes like the necks of camels. They bite a person once, and he feels the burning pain of it for forty years.” [Reported by Al-Ḥākim in Al-Mustadrak (8754), who said it has an authentic chain, and Adh-Dhahabī agreed. It was also graded hasan by Sheikh Albānī in As-Silsilah As-Ṣaḥīḥah (7/1270)] Brief commentary: 1. In the report of Ahmad (17712), it mentions the addition: ((وإن في النار عقارب كأمثال البغال الموكفة تلسع إحداهن اللسعة فيجد حموتها أربعين خريفاً)) "There are also scorpions like saddled mules; if one of them stings a person, he feels its burning pain for forty years." 2. These snakes and scorpions of Hell are terrifying. They are huge, extremely poisonous, and very frightening in appearance.
