Standing for Forty Verses in the Night Prayer During Old Age عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قالت: كان رَسولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقرَأُ وهو قاعِدٌ، فإذا أرادَ أن يَركَعَ قامَ قدرَ ما يَقرَأُ إنسانٌ أربَعينَ آيةً. Narrated 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite while sitting. When he wanted to bow (rukūʿ), he would stand up and recite for about the length it takes a person to read forty verses. [Reported by Bukhari (1118) and Muslim (731)] Brief commentary: 1. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the most eager of people in striving to worship his Lord, especially in the night prayer. This hadith explains part of that. 2. The Mother of the Believers, 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), said that she never saw the Prophet ﷺ recite the Qur’an during the night prayer while sitting. But when he grew older and was no longer able to stand for long, he would pray and recite while sitting. Then, when about forty verses remained, he would stand and recite them while standing, and then bow (rukūʿ). 3. Perhaps he did this so that he would not miss the virtue of standing at the end of the prayer unit, and so that his movement into bowing and prostration would be from a standing position, which shows greater humility and submission to Allah. 4. This hadith shows how strongly he ﷺ was committed to performing the prayer as completely as he could, even in old age. 5. It also shows that it is allowed for a voluntary prayer to be performed while sitting, even if a person is able to stand, and that it is recommended to make the recitation long in the night prayer. https://t.me/madrasatuna/6097
