Implementing a Legal Punishment is Better Than Forty Nights of Rain عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: ((إقامةُ حدٍّ في الأَرضِ؛ خَيرٌ لأهلِها مِن مَطرِ أربَعين ليلةً)) Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Establishing a legal punishment (ḥadd) on earth is better for its people than forty nights of rain.” [Reported by An-Nasa’i (4905); graded as hasan by Sheikh Albani] Brief commentary: 1. Islam established deterrent legal punishments (ḥudūd) that match the seriousness of the major sins committed by wrongdoers. Enforcing these punishments protects society from immoral acts that corrupt it, and it fulfills the right of Allah the Most High. 2. In this hadith, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Establishing a legal punishment on earth,” meaning carrying out Allah’s prescribed punishment on sinners and those who commit major sins, “is better for its people than forty nights of rain.” That is, it is better for them and for the land in which those sins were committed. 3. Rain is mentioned because it usually brings mercy, goodness, and widespread benefit. Therefore, carrying out the punishment brings benefit and goodness that is even greater than forty nights of rain. This is because it deters people from sin and wrongdoing and becomes a cause for blessings and rain from the sky. 4. However, if such punishments are neglected and not properly enforced, this negligence leads people to become more deeply involved in sin. It can also result in drought, hardship, and destruction, and it opens the door to disregarding Allah’s commands. 5. The hadith encourages honoring and respecting the limits set by Allah.
