Fortyfold Forgiveness for Honouring the Deceased Narrated Abu Rafi' that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever washes a deceased person and keeps their faults private will be forgiven forty times. Whoever shrouds a deceased person, Allah will clothe them in fine silk and brocade from Paradise. And whoever digs a grave for a deceased person and buries them in it will receive a reward like that of providing them a home until the Day of Resurrection.” [Reported by Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak (1307). He said it meets the conditions of Muslim, although it was not included by him or Al-Bukhari. Adh-Dhahabi agreed with him in At-Talkhis, and Al-Albani also graded it as authentic] Brief commentary: 1. This hadith explains the virtue of someone who washes a deceased person and then conceals any faults he sees. 2. What may be seen from the deceased in disliked things is of two types: First: matters related to their condition. For example, if the face of the deceased has changed, become dark, or looks unpleasant, this could be a sign of a bad end (and we seek refuge with Allah). In such a case, it is not allowed to tell people, “I saw him in this condition,” because this would expose their faults. The person has already met their Lord, and Allah will judge them with justice or mercy. Second: matters related to the body itself, such as seeing a physical defect on the back or elsewhere that the person used to hide during their lifetime. Whoever covers these matters and keeps them secret will receive a great reward, including forgiveness forty times. 3. Scholars said: this is except in one case—when reporting what he saw brings a benefit. For example, if the deceased was among the people of innovation who spread misguidance, or a person of open immorality who harmed others, and during washing or shrouding he sees something bad, such as a change in skin color, a bad smell, or anything that comes from the body, and he reports it in order to warn people from following that person’s way. In such a case, there is a benefit in informing others for the purpose of warning them, so there is no problem in mentioning it. Otherwise, the Prophet ﷺ encouraged the one who washes the deceased to keep private whatever he sees. And Allah knows best.
