Blood Money for Intentional and Semi-intentional Killing: One Hundred Camels of Which Forty Pregnant She-Camels عن عبدالله بن عمرو أن رسولَ اللهِ ﷺ خطَبَ يومَ الفتحِ بمكةَ ومما قال: ((ألا إن دِيَةَ الخطأِ شبهِ العَمْدِ ما كان بالسَّوْطِ والعصا؛ مائةٌ مِن الإبلِ: منها أربعون في بطونِها أولادها)) Narrated 'Abdullah ibn' Amr: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a sermon on the Day of the Conquest of Makkah. Among what he said was: “Indeed, the blood money for semi-intentional killing—such as what is done with a whip or a stick—is one hundred camels. Of these, forty are pregnant she-camels.” [Reported by Abu Dawud (4547), and graded as good by Al-Albani] Brief Commentary: 1. The Conquest of Makkah was a blessed victory for the Muslims. When the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah, he entered with humility, thanking his Lord for this great victory. Then he delivered a sermon that day. He said “Allāhu Akbar” three times, then said: “There is no diety worthy of worship except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and defeated the allied forces alone.” This is praise of Allah and acknowledgment of His favour—how He fulfilled His promise and granted victory. 2. Since killing among people is something that may occur, the shariah clarified the rulings of blood money (diyah) in different cases to protect rights. The Prophet ﷺ also explained this in his sermon. 3. Shibh 'Amd (semi-intentional killing) refers to a case where a person does not intend to kill, but uses a light weapon like a stick or whip, and the victim dies.
