In general, ownership of livestock falls into three categories:
1) One person owns the animals alone—zakat is straightforward.
2) Two people own them jointly (shared ownership)—zakat applies to the total.
3) Two people have separate shares but mix their livestock in practice (shared management)—this is “mixing of characteristics,” and it also affects zakat.
However, this ruling is specific to livestock. In other types of wealth, each person is treated according to his own share. Combining or separating does not affect zakat there. For example, if a person owns half a zakat threshold in one place and another half in a different place, he still must pay zakat when combined. But in livestock, separation or combination can change the ruling.

A very old animal is weak and of little value, and a defective animal has a clear flaw. Allah says: “Do not aim at the bad of it to spend from it.” The Prophet ﷺ therefore instructed that zakah should be taken from average-quality animals, not the best and not the worst. This ensures fairness for both the wealthy and the poor, and that zakah is collected in a just and balanced way.
