19. A Small Meal That Fed Forty Without Running Out Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: أَنَّ أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ أُمَّهُ، عَمَدَتْ إِلَى مُدٍّ مِنْ شَعِيرٍ جَشَّتْهُ، وَجَعَلَتْ مِنْهُ خَطِيفَةً، وَعَصَرَتْ عُكَّةً عِنْدَهَا، ثُمَّ بَعَثَتْنِي إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ - وَهُوَ فِي أَصْحَابِهِ - فَدَعَوْتُهُ، قَالَ: ((وَمَنْ مَعِي؟)). فَجِئْتُ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ: "وَمَنْ مَعِي؟". فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ، قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّمَا هُوَ شَيْءٌ صَنَعَتْهُ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ. فَدَخَلَ، فَجِيءَ بِهِ وَقَالَ: ((أَدْخِلْ عَلَيَّ عَشَرَةً)). فَدَخَلُوا فَأَكَلُوا حَتَّى شَبِعُوا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((أَدْخِلْ عَلَيَّ عَشَرَةً)). فَدَخَلُوا، فَأَكَلُوا حَتَّى شَبِعُوا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ((أَدْخِلْ عَلَيَّ عَشَرَةً)). حَتَّى عَدَّ أَرْبَعِينَ، ثُمَّ أَكَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ قَامَ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ هَلْ نَقَصَ مِنْهَا شَيْءٌ؟ That his mother, Umm Sulaym, took a measure of barley, ground it, and made some food from it. She also squeezed some oil from a container she had. Then she sent me to the Prophet ﷺ. I came to him while he was with his companions and invited him. He asked, “And those with me?” I went back and said, “He is asking, ‘And those with me?’” Abu Talhah then went out to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is only a small amount of food that Umm Sulaym has prepared.” The Prophet ﷺ entered, and the food was brought. He said, “Let ten people enter upon me.” They came in and ate until they were full. Then he said, “Let ten more come in.” They came in and ate until they were full. Then he said, “Let ten more come in,” until he counted forty people. Then the Prophet ﷺ himself ate, and then he stood up. I began to look to see whether anything had decreased from the food. [Reported by Al-Bukhari (5450) and Muslim (2040)] Brief Commentary: 1. This hadith is a sign of Prophethood, because a small amount of food was enough for a large number of people; Forty men ate and were fully satisfied, yet the food did not run out. 2. Imam Al-Bukhari included this hadith under: "Chapter on the One Who Invites Guests in Groups of Ten, and Sitting for Food in Groups of Ten." Note: In Dammaj, students would typically sit in groups of ten to share a plate. This practice may have been inspired by this hadith. https://t.me/madrasatuna/6046 3. The reason the Prophet ﷺ had the people eat in groups of ten, and Allah knows best, is that there was only one bowl and the food was little. A large crowd would not have been able to eat from it easily. So he arranged them in groups of ten so they could eat comfortably without crowding. 4. The hadith does not prohibit more than ten people from eating together; rather, sharing food is a means of attaining blessing. Abu Dawud narrated from Wahshi ibn Harb that the Prophet ﷺ said: ((اجتمعوا على طعامكم واذكروا اسم الله يبارك لكم)) "Gather together over your food, mention Allah’s name, and He will bless it for you."
