15. One Man Will be Followed by Forty Women Abu Musa Al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ((لَيَأْتِيَنَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَطُوفُ الرَّجُلُ فِيهِ بِالصَّدَقَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ، ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُ أَحَدًا يَأْخُذُهَا مِنْهُ، وَيُرَى الرَّجُلُ الْوَاحِدُ يَتْبَعُهُ أَرْبَعُونَ امْرَأَةً، يَلُذْنَ بِهِ مِنْ قِلَّةِ الرِّجَالِ وَكَثْرَةِ النِّسَاءِ)) “A time will come upon people when a man will go around with charity made of gold, but he will not find anyone to accept it from him. And one man will be seen followed by forty women, who will seek his support and protection because there will be few men and many women.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari (1414) and Muslim (1012)] Brief Commentary: 1. This hadith is among the many signs that show the truth of the Prophet’s message, as it includes several prophecies. 2. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that near the end of time, a period will come when people will be so rich that no one will accept charity. A man will go around trying to give his zakah in gold, but he will not find any poor person to take it. 3. Some explained that this will occur during the time of the Mahdi and when Esa (peace be upon him) returns. Others explain that people will care more about the afterlife and will not be interested in extra wealth. They will be satisfied with just what they need and will not collect or store money. 4. This hadith teaches us to give charity quickly and not put it off, because if we delay, there might come a time when no one needs it or is willing to accept it anymore. 5. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said that a time will come when one man will be responsible for many women—around forty or even fifty (as mentioned in another hadith). These women will depend on him for support and protection. This could be because many men will die in wars and conflicts, leaving more women than men.
