13. Poor Emigrants Will Enter Paradise 40 Years Before the Rich Abu ‘Abdirrahman Al-Hubuli said: I heard ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas when a man asked him, “Are we not among the poor of the Muhajireen (the emigrants)?” ‘Abdullah replied, “Do you have a wife you go home to?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Do you have a house to live in?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Then you are among the rich.” The man said, “I also have a servant.” He said, “Then you are among the kings.” … Abu ‘Abdirrahman said: Three men came to ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr while I was with him. They said, “O Abu Muhammad, by Allah, we have nothing—we cannot afford expenses, a riding animal, or belongings.” He said to them, “As you wish: if you want, you can come back to us and we will give you whatever Allah makes easy for us to give you. If you want, we can mention your situation to the ruler. Or if you want, you can be patient. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ((إِنَّ فُقَرَاءَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ يَسْبِقُونَ الْأَغْنِيَاءَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، بِأَرْبَعِينَ خَرِيفًا)). ‘The poor among the Muhajireen will enter Paradise forty years before the rich on the Day of Judgment.’” They said, “Then we will be patient and not ask for anything.” [Reported by Muslim 2979] Brief Commentary: 1. Allah has promised a great reward for those who remain patient through life’s hardships for His sake. 2. This hadith gives glad tidings to Muslims who remain patient in poverty—they will be allowed to enter Paradise before others. 3. They will enter Paradise earlier not only because of their patience, but also because they have less to answer for. The rich will be questioned about their wealth—how they earned it and how they spent it—while the poor do not carry this burden. 4. The poor emigrants are those who moved to Madinah during the Prophet’s time and left their wealth behind, so they needed help from others. 5. The three men chose to remain patient in their poverty, because entering Paradise sooner is better than being delayed, and patience in this life is easier than hardship in the Hereafter. 6. This virtue is not limited to the emigrants, because another hadith states that the poor in general will enter Paradise before the rich by half a day, which equals five hundred worldly years.
