12. A Gate of Paradise Stretching 40 Years Khalid ibn ‘Umair Al-‘Adawi said: ‘Utbah ibn Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) gave us a sermon. He praised Allah and spoke well of Him, then said: أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ الدُّنْيَا قَدْ آذَنَتْ بِصَرْمٍ وَوَلَّتْ حَذَّاءَ وَلَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهَا إِلَّا صُبَابَةٌ كَصُبَابَةِ الْإِنَاءِ يَتَصَابُّهَا صَاحِبُهَا وَإِنَّكُمْ مُنْتَقِلُونَ مِنْهَا إِلَى دَارٍ لَا زَوَالَ لَهَا فَانْتَقِلُوا بِخَيْرِ مَا بِحَضْرَتِكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ ذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ الْحَجَرَ يُلْقَى مِنْ شَفَةِ جَهَنَّمَ فَيَهْوِي فِيهَا سَبْعِينَ عَامًا لَا يُدْرِكُ لَهَا قَعْرًا وَوَاللهِ لَتُمْلَأَنَّ أَفَعَجِبْتُمْ؟ وَلَقَدْ ذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ مَا بَيْنَ مِصْرَاعَيْنِ مِنْ مَصَارِيعِ الْجَنَّةِ مَسِيرَةُ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّ عَلَيْهَا يَوْمٌ وَهُوَ كَظِيظٌ مِنَ الزِّحَامِ. “To proceed: The life of this world is coming to an end and is quickly passing away. There is only a tiny amount left of it—like the last drops left in a container that someone pours out. You are going to leave this world and move to a home that will never end, so take with you the best of what you have. We have been told that a stone will be thrown from the edge of Hell and will fall in it for seventy years without reaching the bottom. By Allah, it will surely be filled—does that surprise you? And we have also been told that the distance between two gates of Paradise is a journey of forty years, yet a day will come when it will be crowded with people.” [Reported by Muslim, 2967] Brief Commentary: 1. It is established that Paradise has eight gates. 2. Allah made their entrances wide and spacious, and several hadiths describe how large they are. 3. As-San‘ani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Know that it has been reported: ‘The distance between the two sides of a gate of Paradise is like the distance between Makkah and Hajar.’ And in another narration reported by Ahmad: ‘The distance between the two sides is a journey of forty years.’... وهي مختلفة؛ منها ما هو في غاية السعة، كما في حديث أحمد، ومنها ما هو دونه كما في الحديث الأول. but they differ—some are extremely wide, as mentioned in the narration of Ahmad, while others are less wide, as mentioned in the first narration.” [At-Tanwir Sharh Al-Jami‘ As-Saghir, 4/522–523] 4. Similarly, Ibn Al-Qayyim rahimahullah said: فإن كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هو الذاكر لهم ذلك، كان هذا سعة ما بين باب من أبوابها، ولعله الباب الأعظم. “If the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was the one who told them this, then it refers to the width of one of the gates of Paradise—perhaps the biggest of its gates.” [Hadi Al-Arwah, p. 115] https://t.me/madrasatuna/6034
