11. Eighty of This Ummah, Forty of Other Nations Narrated by Buraidah ibn Al-Husaib Al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ((أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ عِشْرُونَ وَمِائَةُ صَفٍّ؛ ثَمَانُونَ مِنْهَا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ، وَأَرْبَعُونَ مِنْ سَائِرِ الْأُمَمِ)) "The people of Paradise will be arranged in 120 rows: eighty of them from this Ummah, and forty from the other nations." This hadith is reported by At-Tirmidhi (2546), Ibn Majah (4289) and others; it was authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Ibn Majah. Brief Commentary: 1. Allah has honoured the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ above all other nations in various ways. 2. One of these is making this Ummah the largest group among those who will enter Paradise. 3.This hadith highlights that they will constitute two-thirds of the people in Jannah, as the apparent meaning is that the rows in Paradise are equal in size. 4. The Prophet ﷺ hoped that his Ummah would make up half of the people of paradise, as in another hadith, but Allah, through His mercy, increased it beyond what he hoped for. 5. Some interpreted it as eighty rows equivalent to forty in size, which would make the Ummah half the total. However the former view seems more apparent, and Allah knows best.
