Between The Two blows of The Trumpet is Forty Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ما بينَ النَّفخَتَينِ أربَعونَ. قالوا: يا أبا هُرَيرةَ أربَعونَ يَومًا؟ قال: أبَيتُ، قالوا: أربَعونَ شَهرًا؟ قال: أبَيتُ، قالوا: أربَعونَ سَنةً؟ قال: أبَيتُ، ثُمَّ يُنزِلُ اللهُ مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً فيَنبُتونَ كما يَنبُتُ البَقلُ. قال: وليسَ مِنَ الإنسانِ شيءٌ إلَّا يَبلى، إلَّا عَظمًا واحِدًا، وهو عَجْبُ الذَّنَبِ، ومِنْه يُرَكَّبُ الخَلقُ يَومَ القيامةِ. Between the two blows (of the trumpet) is forty. They asked: “O Abu Hurairah, is it forty days?” He said: “I refuse.” They asked: “Forty months?” He said: “I refuse.” They asked: “Forty years?” He said: “I refuse.” Then Allah will send down rain from the sky, and people will grow like plants grow. He said: “There is nothing of the human body that does not decay except one bone, which is the tailbone. From it, the creation will be rebuilt on the Day of Resurrection.” [Reported by Bukhari (4814) & Muslim (2955)] Brief Commentary: 1. Belief in the blowing of the trumpet is an essential part of īmān in the Last Day. It is established by clear evidence from the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. The angel Isrāfīl, who is responsible for the trumpet, is already prepared and waiting. The Prophet ﷺ said: ((كيفَ أنعَمُ وقدِ التقَمَ صاحبُ القرنِ القرنَ وحنَى جبهتَهُ وأصغى سمعَهُ ينتَظِرُ أن يؤمَرَ أن ينفخَ فينفخ)) “How can I feel at ease when the one with the trumpet has already taken it in his mouth, lowered his head, and is listening carefully, waiting for the command to blow it?” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi (3243); graded 'Sahih' by Sheikh Albani] 2. This hadith indicates that there are only two blows of the trumpet, which is also supported by the saying of Allah: ﴿وَنُفِخَ فِي الصّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَن فِي السَّماواتِ وَمَن فِي الأَرضِ إِلّا مَن شاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ نُفِخَ فيهِ أُخرى فَإِذا هُم قِيامٌ يَنظُرونَ﴾ “And the trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and suddenly they will be standing, looking on.” 3. The first blow causes death for all living beings except those Allah wills. The second blow is when people are resurrected. 4. As for nafkhat al-fazaʿ (the “blow of fear”) mentioned in the saying of Allah: ﴿وَيَومَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصّورِ فَفَزِعَ مَن فِي السَّماواتِ وَمَن فِي الأَرضِ إِلّا مَن شاءَ اللهُ وَكُلٌّ أَتَوهُ داخِرينَ﴾ “And on the Day the trumpet is blown, all who are in the heavens and the earth will be terrified, except whom Allah wills, and all will come to Him humbled,” this refers to the same blow that causes death. It begins with fear: when people hear the sound, they become frightened and try to understand it, then they fall dead. This is explained in the hadith of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr (reported by Muslim 2940): ((ثُمَّ يُنفَخُ في الصُّورِ، فلا يَسمَعُه أحَدٌ إلَّا أصغى ليتًا ورَفَعَ ليتًا، قال: وأوَّلُ مَن يَسمَعُه رَجُلٌ يَلوطُ حَوضَ إبِلِه، قال: فيَصعَقُ، ويَصعَقُ النَّاسُ)). “The trumpet will be blown, and no one will hear it except that they will tilt their necks and listen carefully. The first to hear it will be a man repairing his water trough, and he will fall dead, and the people will also fall dead.” 5. The time between the two blows is “forty”, without specifying whether it is days, months, or years. When asked, Abu Hurairah refused to define it, either because he did not know or chose not to specify. 6. After that, Allah sends rain, and people will grow again from the earth like plants. 7. The human body decays completely except for the tailbone (‘ajb al-dhanab), from which the body will be recreated.
