7. Forty Men Intercede for the Deceased Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ((ما مِن رَجُلٍ مُسلِمٍ يَموتُ، فيَقومُ على جِنازَتِه أربَعونَ رَجُلًا لا يُشرِكونَ باللهِ شيئًا؛ إلَّا شَفَّعَهُمُ اللهُ فيه)) “If a Muslim man passes away and forty men who do not associate partners with Allah pray over him, Allah grants their intercession for him.” [Reported by Muslim 948] Summarised Commentrary: 1. Intercession (shafā‘ah) means asking Allah; those praying at the funeral ask Allah to forgive the deceased. 2. Allah accepting their intercession means He forgives the deceased out of His grace and mercy. 3. The hadith encourages Muslims to attend funeral prayers in order to increase the number of people praying for the deceased. 4. Other narrations mention different numbers. The Prophet ﷺ may have mentioned different numbers at different times (100, then 40, then 3 rows). 5. Two conditions for this intercession: (a) They are Muslims who do not associate partners with Allah. (b) They sincerely pray for the deceased and ask forgiveness for him.
