2. Renewing One's Devotion to Allah After Forty Allāh جل وعلا said: {وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ إِحْسَـٰنًا ۖ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا ۖ وَحَمْلُهُۥ وَفِصَـٰلُهُۥ ثَلَـٰثُونَ شَهْرًا ۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ وَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً قَالَ رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِىٓ أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَىَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَٰلِدَىَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَـٰلِحًا تَرْضَىٰهُ وَأَصْلِحْ لِى فِى ذُرِّيَّتِىٓ ۖ إِنِّى تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِنِّى مِنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ} “We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them in hardship and delivered them in hardship. Their ˹period of˺ bearing and weaning is thirty months. In time, when the child reaches their prime at the age of forty, they pray, ‘My Lord! Inspire me to always be thankful for Your favours which You bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do good deeds that please You. And make my offspring righteous. I truly repent to You, and I truly submit to Your Will.’” [Sūrah al-Aḥqāf: 15] Commentary: Imam Al-Qurtubi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentions in his Tafsir of this Ayah: “Allah mentions that whoever reaches forty has reached the age to understand the extent of His blessings upon him and his parents, and to be grateful. Malik said: "أدركت أهل العلم ببلدنا وهم يطلبون الدنيا والعلم ويخالطون الناس، حتى يأتي لأحدهم أربعون سنة، فإذا أتت عليهم اعتزلوا الناس واشتغلوا بالعبادة حتى يأتيهم الموت." “I saw the people of knowledge in our land seeking both worldly livelihood and knowledge, and mixing with people. But when one of them reached forty years of age, he would withdraw from people and devote himself to worship until death came to him.” [End of Quote] Similarly, Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “‘When he reaches his full strength’ means when he is strong and mature. ‘And reaches forty years’ means his intellect is complete, his understanding is perfect, and his judgment is steady. It is said that a person rarely changes much after forty. Masruq said: "إذا بلغ أحدكم أربعين سنةً فليأخذ حذره" ‘When one of you reaches forty, let them be cautious.’... Ibn Kathir continues: "هذا فيه إرشاد لمن بلغ الأربعين أن يجدد التوبة والإنابة إلى الله، عز وجل، ويعزم عليها" "This Ayah guides those who reach forty to renew their repentance and return sincerely to Allah.” [Tafsir Al-Qur’an Al-‘Adhim] Ibn Al-Jawzi said in Lataif Al-Maʿarif: "وكان كثير من السَّلف إذا بلغ الأربعين تفرَّغ للعبادة." “Many of the Salaf would devote themselves to worship when they reached the age of forty.” https://t.me/madrasatuna/6016
