1. Reaching Forty is a Warning Sign Allah جل وعلا said: { وَهُمۡ یَصۡطَرِخُونَ فِیهَا رَبَّنَاۤ أَخۡرِجۡنَا نَعۡمَلۡ صَـٰلِحًا غَیۡرَ ٱلَّذِی كُنَّا نَعۡمَلُۚ أَوَلَمۡ نُعَمِّرۡكُم مَّا یَتَذَكَّرُ فِیهِ مَن تَذَكَّرَ وَجَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلنَّذِیرُۖ فَذُوقُوا۟ فَمَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِینَ مِن نَّصِیرٍ } "They will cry out loud in Hell, ‘Lord, let us out, and we will do righteous deeds, not what we did before!’- ‘ Did We not give you a life long enough to take warning if you were going to? The warner came to you, now taste the punishment.’ The evildoers will have nobody to help them." [Surah Fāṭir: 37] Al-Qurtubi rahimahullah mentions under the tafsir of this Ayah: "The wise one, At-Tirmidhi, mentioned in a narration from ʿAta’ ibn Abi Rabah, from Ibn ʿAbbas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “On the Day of Resurrection, those who reached the age of sixty will be called. This is the age referred to by Allah in His saying: ‘Did We not give you a life long enough for anyone who would remember to take heed?’” It was also reported from Ibn ʿAbbas that this age is forty years. The same view was reported from Al-Hasan Al-Basri and Masruq. This opinion also has a valid basis. The evidence for it is the saying of Allah: ﴿حَتَّى إِذا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً﴾ “Until, when he reaches his full strength and reaches forty years…” [Al-Ahqaf 46:15]. At forty, the intellect reaches its full maturity. What comes before it and what comes after it is somewhat less than it. And Allah knows best." [End of quote]. Notes: 1. Forty is not explicitly stated in this Ayah, but it is included here according to the tafsir of some of the Salaf. 2.. This should not be misunderstood to mean that those below forty can continue to live a life of recklessness. 3. In the Hijri calendar, a person reaches 40 about 1 year and 2 months earlier than in the Gregorian calendar. So, if you are 38 years and 10 months old in the Gregorian calendar, the warning has already reached you. 4.
