Can You Leave Makkah and Return for Another Umrah?

Question: May Allah reward you. The questioner asks: Is it allowed for me to perform an Umrah for my aunt after finishing my own Umrah, and enter ihram from Taif from the miqat? Shaykh Sulayman Ar-Ruhayli: If you leave Makkah after finishing your Umrah with no purpose except to perform another Umrah, this was disliked by the Salaf, and they used to discourage it. It does not matter whether you go to Taif, Jeddah, Rabigh, or Madinah. As long as you leave Makkah only to come back with another Umrah, the Salaf disliked this practice. They said that staying in Makkah and continuing in worship there is better than leaving it, whether the place is near or far. They disliked that a person performing Umrah would turn his back to the Ka‘bah without any purpose except to return again for another Umrah—such as going to Tan‘eem only to perform another Umrah, going to Rabigh only for that reason, or going to Madinah only to enter ihram from Dhul-Hulayfah and come back for Umrah. The Salaf disliked this and warned against it. Some of them even said, “I do not know whether such a person will be rewarded or punished.” So, servant of Allah, if you have completed your Umrah and you have no reason to leave Makkah, then stay in Makkah and enjoy the blessings Allah has given you by increasing in tawaf, prayer, and other acts of worship. However, if you leave Makkah for a genuine reason and then return, the ruling is different. For example, if you performed Umrah and then went to Jeddah to visit the embassy or consulate, and that was truly your purpose—and Allah knows the reality—then when you return you may enter ihram from Jeddah and perform Umrah for your aunt who has passed away, or for someone who is unable to come to Makkah due to a real physical inability. The inability must be physical, not because of lack of money or other reasons. Similarly, if you went to Madinah to visit the Prophet’s Masjid and stayed there for a day, two days, or three days—there is no specific limit for staying there, and it is best simply to increase in good deeds. There is no rule that it must be eight days or any specific number. After that, if you want to return to Makkah and perform another Umrah for yourself, your aunt, or someone else for whom it is allowed, then this is permissible and there is no problem. Also, if after finishing Umrah you heard that Taif has a cool climate and you wanted to visit it, so you went there and stayed for a day, and then decided to return to Makkah and perform another Umrah, this is also allowed. So pay attention, servant of Allah: If you leave Makkah only for the purpose of performing another Umrah, the Salaf disliked this and it is not from the Sunnah. But if you leave Makkah for a valid reason and then wish to return and perform another Umrah for yourself or someone else (for whom it is permissible), even if it is on the same day, then it is allowed and there is no problem with it.
