𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 (57)

Repetitive 'Umrahs in One Trip Sheikh Uthaymeen rahimahullah states: Here we point out something that some people do: repeating Umrah every day, or every other day, during the same trip. This is considered an innovation (bid‘ah). It was not the practice of the Companions to repeat Umrah several times during one journey. Rather, each journey normally has only one Umrah. What many people do today has no basis. If something has no basis in the law of Allah, it becomes an innovation. In fact, Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that frequently repeating Umrah is disliked according to the agreement of the Salaf. So what about a person who wants to perform Umrah ten times in ten days? The first day for himself, the second for his mother, the third and fourth for his grandmother, the fifth for his grandfather, the sixth for his maternal grandfather and grandmother, then for his brother, sister, uncle, aunt, and so on. Who said this is prescribed or part of the religion of Allah? Some scholars from the Salaf even said: I do not know about those who go out to Tan‘eem and come back with another Umrah—whether they will be rewarded or whether they will be sinful. So this practice is a mistake and has no foundation. I remember seeing a man once while he was performing sa‘ee. Half of his head was completely shaved, shining white, and the other half was still very black with hair. We asked him why, and told him that shaving part of the head and leaving the rest (qaza') is a disliked practice. He replied, “This half is for yesterday’s Umrah, and the rest is for today’s Umrah.” I do not know—if this man wanted to perform four or five Umrahs, would he divide his head accordingly? If he wanted four Umrahs, he would shave a quarter each time; if five, then a fifth each time, and so on. When you reflect on this, you see that all of this comes from strong religious emotion in their hearts. They love to increase in good deeds. But the desire to increase in good must be guided by the Shariah. We must ask: Did the Shariah teach this? If the answer is yes, then we say: go ahead and increase in it. But if the answer is no, then we say: stop—do not do something that the Shariah did not bring.
