The 27th Word Theory Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned a statement from some of the Malikiyyah in his book Al-Muhalla. They said that Laylat Al-Qadr is the 27th night of Ramadan because of the word (هي) in Surah Al-Qadr, in the Ayah: {سلام هي حتى مطلع الفجر} “Peace IT is until the break of dawn.” They argued that the word “IT/هي” is the 27th word in the surah, and that this is a hint that Laylat Al-Qadr occurs on the 27th night. Ibn Hazm responded by saying that the person who made such a claim deserves to be in the maristan—which was a hospital where the mentally ill were kept. In other words, he strongly rejected this idea and said that such reasoning has no evidence. Calculations like these have no reliable basis, and Muslims should not depend on them. He also said that ideas like this come from someone who does not have sound reasoning, and he added: “How could someone think that his mind discovered something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not know?” And Allah knows best.
