From Cruelty to Madness, Then Kindness to Sanity Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated the following story — and were it not for my respect for the Shaykh, I would have dismissed it altogether. He said: "They say that a man once slaughtered a young camel near its mother. When he killed the baby camel, the mother began rolling in the dust around her slaughtered calf. She kept doing this out of intense grief until she died from sorrow. After that, the man was struck with madness — may Allah protect us. He began wandering aimlessly in the desert. One day, while out in the open land, he saw a small bird (a little reddish bird) whose nest had fallen from a tree. The baby birds were inside it on the ground. The mother bird was flying around them, trying to lift them and return them to safety in the tree, but she could not. She kept circling and crying over her young. Although the man was insane and not thinking clearly, he picked up the nest with the baby birds and placed it back on a branch of the tree, securing it there. When the mother bird saw her young safe again, she came down to them happily. At that moment, Allah restored the man's sanity. Subhanallah! Because he had shown kindness to the bird — even without intending to — Allah rewarded him. This is because when a person’s action benefits others, he is rewarded for it, even if he did not originally intend that benefit. This is an important matter students should pay attention to. For example, when a person plants crops or trees, birds and animals may eat from them. Did he originally plant them to benefit the birds? No, he planted them for his own benefit.
