Claiming a Fixed Spot in the Masjid Sometimes you come to the masjid early and find an open spot in the first row, but then someone tells you, “That place belongs to so-and-so uncle.” “Where is the uncle?” you wonder. They explain, “He’s still at home getting ready. He usually shows up just ten minutes before the iqamah.” If that’s the case, doesn't the one who came early have more right to that spot than the uncle? Have you been in this situation before? People, usually old uncles, become attached to spots in the masjid such that they feel agitated unless they are in that exact spot. If they see someone taking that spot before them, they may pressure that person to move, claiming the spot as if it were their private property. Or they may walk away angrily, sighing in frustration. Sometimes they even surprise the one sitting there by declaring, “This has been my place for such and such years!” They may even ask other ignorant worshippers like themselves to help force the person to leave. These are just some of the many foolish practices that have affected many masjids. We seek refuge in Allah from that. This action goes against the Sunnah. Abdurrahman ibn Shibl reported that: ((نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ نَقْرَةِ الْغُرَابِ ، وَافْتِرَاشِ السَّبْعِ ، وَأَنْ يُوَطِّنَ الرَّجُلُ الْمَكَانَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ كَمَا يُوَطِّنُ الْبَعِيرُ)) “The Prophet ﷺ FORBADE pecking like a crow, sitting like a wild animal, and that a man should fix a place for himself in the masjid just as a camel fixes its resting place.” This hadith was recorded by Ahmad ibn Hanbal in Al-Musnad and by Abu Dawud in Sunan Abi Dawud. It was graded as hasan by Muhammad Nasir Ad-Din Al-Albani in As-Silsilah As-Sahihah. Sheikh Fawzan hafidhahullah explained in Ahkam Hudhur Al-Masjid: “If a person always sticks to a specific spot in the masjid, it may cause him to lose the sweetness of worship because he becomes too attached to that place and overly concerned about it. It may also lead to showing off, seeking recognition, and becoming known for it. In addition, he misses the chance to increase the number of places of worship that will testify for him on the Day of Judgment. Some people who always keep to a certain spot even feel resentment when they see someone else sitting there.
