How Is Jinn Possession Possible During Ramadan If Jinns Are Chained up? Al-Qurtubi rahimahullah said: "It may be that only some devils are chained — specifically the strongest ones — as mentioned in some narrations, not all of them." [Fat-h Al-Bari] This is supported by the following: 1⃣. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ((إذا كانَت أوَّلُ ليلةٍ من رمَضانَ صُفِّدتِ الشَّياطينُ ومَردةُ الجِنِّ)) "When the first night of Ramadan begins, the devils and the rebellious jinn are chained up." [Reported by At-Tirmidhi (682) and Ibn Majah (1642); graded sahih by Al-Albani] 2⃣. Al-Bukhari reported in his Sahih from ‘Ali ibn Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Safiyyah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, told him that she came to visit the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in i‘tikaf (seclusion for worship) in the masjid during the last ten nights of Ramadhan. She spoke with him for a while, then she got up to leave. The Prophet ﷺ stood up to walk her back. When they reached the door of the masjid near the door of Umm Salamah, two men from the Ansar passed by and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to them, “Take it easy. This is Safiyyah bint Huyayy.” They said, “SubhanAllah, O Messenger of Allah!” (meaning they would never think anything improper). This was difficult for them to hear. The Prophet ﷺ then said, “Shaytan flows through the son of Adam like blood flows through the body, and I feared that he might throw something into your hearts.” Bear in mind he said this during the last 10 nights of Ramadhan! 3⃣. Muslim reported on the authority of ‘Uthman ibn Abil-‘As that he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, Shaytan comes between me and my prayer and my recitation, confusing me.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is a Shaytan called Khinzab. If you sense him, seek refuge in Allah from him and lightly blow (dry spit) to your left three times.” He said, “I did that, and Allah removed him from me.” There is no evidence suggesting that this Shaytan stops his whispering during Ramadhan! 4⃣.
