You Can Offer Tarāwīḥ in a Vehicle While Travelling Question Is it permissible to pray Tarāwīḥ in a car? Sheikh Mushtaq Adh-Dhali'ee If a person is not travelling (i.e., resident), then no — it is not permissible to pray voluntary prayers in a car. However, while travelling, yes — it is permissible to pray voluntary prayers in a car. This includes Witr, night prayer (Qiyām Al-Layl), regular Sunnah prayers, Duḥā prayer, and other voluntary prayers. These may be prayed on one’s riding animal, in a car, or on other means of transportation. It is authentically reported from Ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray voluntary prayers on his riding beast, facing whatever direction it was heading, and he would also pray Witr on it. However, he would not pray the obligatory prayers on it. It is recommended for a traveller to pray tarawih. If a person is able to stop and pray on the ground, that is better. But if he prays on his ride, it is permissible. The Prophet ﷺ would not abandon the night prayer, whether travelling or at home. So based on this, if someone wants to pray on his vehicle [while travelling], it is better to face the qiblah at the beginning of the prayer when saying the opening takbīr. After that, he may continue praying in whatever direction the vehicle goes. If he is unable to face the qiblah at the beginning, there is no problem.
