Introduction All praise is for Allāh, Lord of the worlds. I bear witness that there is no diety worthy of worship except Allāh alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger. May Allāh send peace and blessings upon him, his family, and all his companions. This is a brief set of advice for the brothers who go out to give da‘wah during the month of Ramaḍān or at other times throughout the year. I originally delivered this advice to the brothers in a general lesson seven years ago, in response to some questions that were asked about this topic. Later, some of our brothers—may Allāh reward them and bless their time—transcribed it so that others could benefit from it. I then reviewed it, corrected some phrases, and added a few more points. It has now become this small booklet. I ask Allāh to make it beneficial for me and for all my brothers who call to Him. All praise is for Allāh, Lord of the worlds. A questioner asks: What is the advice for the brothers who go out for da‘wah during the month of Ramaḍān? What should they teach? What books should they take with them? All praise is for Allāh, Lord of the worlds. I bear witness that there is no diety worthy of worship except Allāh alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger, may Allāh’s peace and blessings be upon him. As for what follows: The advice for the brothers who go out for da‘wah during Ramaḍān—and this is also general advice for all callers to Allāh—is as follows: We advise them to seek reward from Allāh and to remember that calling people to Allāh is the path of the Prophets and Messengers, peace and blessings be upon them. It is the best speech and one of the greatest duties. Allāh تعالى says: ﴿وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِّمَّن دَعَا إِلَى اللهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ﴾ “Who is better in speech than one who calls to Allāh, does righteous deeds, and says: ‘Indeed, I am among the Muslims.’” [Surah Fuṣṣilat: 33] And Allāh تعالى says: ﴿لَّا خَيْرَ فِي كَثِيرِ مِن نَجَوَاهُمْ إِلَّا مَنْ أَمَرَ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَوْ مَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ إِصْلَاحٍ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللهِ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عظيما﴾ “There is no good in much of their private talk, except for those who encourage charity, kindness, or reconciliation between people. Whoever does that seeking the pleasure of Allāh, We will give him a great reward.” [Surah An-Nisa: 114] When the caller understands this, he should feel that Allāh has honoured him with this great responsibility and opportunity for reward; and that Allāh has chosen him for something great and made him carry out a duty that was the mission of the Prophets and Messengers, peace and blessings be upon them. So he should be sincere to Allāh in this work, seeking his reward only from Him. He should not wait for praise, payment, or thanks from people. We also advise the student of knowledge not to rush into going out for da‘wah unless he sees in himself that he is truly qualified to benefit the Muslims. Sometimes, some brothers from certain towns strongly request that callers come to them during Ramaḍān. They may insist that certain students go with them, even if those students are not yet ready for this responsibility. This can lead to harm—for the one going out and for the da‘wah in general. When you, as a caller, go to a village, they may appoint you as their imam, preacher, and teacher. They may also come to you with questions about religious rulings. So do not rush forward unless you believe you can truly benefit them and that you have enough knowledge to establish a beneficial da‘wah. Strive to seek knowledge and increase your understanding until Allāh opens the way for you. Perhaps Allāh will make you a means of benefit for others.
