From the strange mistakes caused by misreading texts: Al-Khatīb narrated in Al-Jāmi‘ li Akhlāq Ar-Rāwi wa Ādāb As-Sāmi‘ (no. 625) from Abu Al-‘Aynā’, who said: “I attended a gathering of one of the inattentive ḥadīth scholars. He quoted a ḥadīth and said: «عن رسول الله ﷺ، عن جبريل، عن الله، عن رجل» ‘From the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, from Jibrīl, from Allāh, from a man.’ I said, ‘Who is this man who could be fit to be the sheikh of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic?’ Then it became clear that he had misread the text. What it actually said was: ‘Allāh, عز وجل, the Mighty and Majestic (ʿazza wa jall).’” Its chain of narration is sound.
