Muwฤlฤt in Ghusl
Question: We return to the questions of our brothers and sisters. Our brother Khalid asked about continuity (muwฤlฤt) in ritual bathing (ghusl): is it obligatory? First, what does muwฤlฤt mean?
Sheikh Saโd Al-Kathlฤn แธฅafidhahullฤh:
Muwฤlฤt means that one should not delay washing a body part until the previously washed part has dried. It is one of the obligatory acts of ablution (wuแธลซสพ) according to the stronger opinion. As for ritual bathing (ghusl), there is a scholarly difference of opinion, but the stronger view is also that it is obligatory.
For example, a person should not wash his head at dawn and then delay washing the rest of his body until noon. Rather, continuity is required, meaning that washing some body parts should not be delayed, and the entire body should be covered with water in one continuous act.
Yes, a slight delay is excused, but the time should not become prolonged according to common custom.
