Ruling on Placing the Forehead on the Hand as a Form of Respect Sheikh โ€™Abdurrazzฤq Al-Badr แธฅafidhahullฤh said: Some people, when they kiss their fatherโ€™s hand, go beyond merely kissing itโ€”what do they do? They place their forehead upon it; that is, they kiss their fatherโ€™s hand and then place their forehead on it. The scholars have prohibited this practice and have referred to it as the minor prostration (as-sajdah aแนฃ-แนฃughrฤ). It is not permissible, whether with oneโ€™s father or with anyone else. Kissing the hand is allowed; however, placing oneโ€™s forehead on the fatherโ€™s hand after greeting him is not permissible. The scholars have explicitly forbidden this. Imam Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim (may Allฤh have mercy on him) was asked about this in his legal verdicts, and he stated that this constitutes an act of shirk. It is not permissible to prostrate, because placing the forehead in this manner is prostration, which the scholars have termed the minor prostration. The scholars have well-known legal rulings on this matter. Shaykh Ibn Baz and other scholars have likewise prohibited it. They forbid placing the forehead on the fatherโ€™s handโ€”or on the motherโ€™s handโ€”after kissing it. What is permissible and allowed is kissing the head and kissing the hand.
