The Danger of Reviling The Ṣaḥābah
Imām Adh-Dhahabī said, as recorded in Tārīkh Al-Islām (vol. 5, p. 251):
Al-Ḥākim said: I heard Ibn Qāniʿ in Baghdad say: I heard ʿĪsā ibn Muḥammad Aṭ-Ṭahmānī say: I heard the Amīr Ismāʿīl ibn Aḥmad say:
“Our father brought us a tutor who taught us rafḍ (revilement of ṣaḥābah). I fell asleep and saw the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—together with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. He said, ‘Why do you revile my two companions?’ I stood speechless, whereupon he gestured to me with his hand in this manner and blew it toward my face. I awoke in terror, trembling with fever.
I remained confined to my bed for seven months, and my hair fell out.
Then my brother entered and said, ‘What is your story?’ I related it to him. He said, ‘Apologise to the Messenger of Allāh—peace and blessings be upon him.’ So I apologised and repented.
No more than a week passed before my hair began to grow again.”
