Discounts Offered During Non-Muslim Holidays [Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day, New Year's Day...] Question: What is the ruling on taking advantage of the discounts that many large stores offer at the beginning of the new year? Sheikh Sulayman Ar-Ruhaili hafidahullah: There is no problem for a Muslim to benefit from the discounts given at the end of the year. By this, he is not celebrating, and these sales are not considered a religious festival. They are merely a service/discount offered at this time, so he is allowed to benefit from it. From an economic standpoint, these price reductions are not connected to celebrating the New Year. They are mainly done to clear out remaining stock and adjust the company’s budget at the end of the fiscal year. Companies want to get rid of excess inventory, and by this point most of their sales are pure profit, so they lower the prices. These discounts usually start about a month and a half before the year ends because businesses follow the fiscal calendar. So, economically, these discounts have nothing to do with Christmas. And even if a company did offer them because of Christmas, it would still not harm a Muslim who is not celebrating, because such discounts are not considered one of the religious symbols of the holidayβ€”they are simply activities that happen on that day. There is a difference between something done for a festival and something done during a festival. The same applies to discount cards that some Muslim employees receive in non-Muslim countries. Their companies may give them gift cards to use on Christmas or New Year’s. It is permissible for a Muslim to use these cards on those days, because again, these things are not religious symbolsβ€”just activities that take place on the holiday. Therefore, there is no harm for a Muslim in benefiting from these discounts. Source: https://t.me/sidehustlez/108
