Dutifulness to One's Parents
Al-Aṣbahānī narrated from Al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab — an eminent muḥaddith who narrated from Ibrāhīm An-Nakhaʿī and Mujāhid, the student of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with them).
He said — may Allāh have mercy on him:
“I once stayed among a certain tribe, and beside them was a graveyard. After ʿAṣr one day, a grave split open, and a man came out of it — his head was the head of a donkey, and his body was the body of a human. He brayed three times, then the grave closed over him again.”
He continued:
“There was an old woman nearby spinning wool. A woman said to me: ‘Do you see that old woman?’ I replied: ‘What about her?’ She said: ‘She is the mother of that man.’ I asked: ‘What is his story?’ She replied: ‘He used to drink alcohol. When he returned home, his mother would say to him: My son, fear Allāh! Until when will you continue drinking this alcohol? He would say to her: You are only braying like a donkey!
The man died after ʿAṣr.
Since then, every day after ʿAṣr, the grave splits open, he emerges and brays three times, then the grave closes over him again.’”
Al-Aṣbahānī said that Abūl ʿAbbās Al-Aṣamm related it in an assembly in Naysābūr in the presence of various ḥadīth scholars, and none of them objected to it.
Sheikh Al-Albānī graded it 'Ḥasan' in Ṣaḥīḥ At-Targhīb wa At-Tarhīb (2/665).
