Ruling on Sending Ṣalāh and Salām upon the Prophet ﷺ
During the Q&A session, Shaykh ʿAbdullāh Lamḥ Al-Khawlānī (ḥafidhahullāh) stated that sending Ṣalāh and Salām upon the Prophet ﷺ is OBLIGATORY, based on the following evidences:
1. The saying of Allāh ﷻ:
﴿إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا﴾
“Indeed, Allāh confers blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.” (Al-Aḥzāb 33:56)
2. The ḥadīth of Jibrīl (peace be upon him):
((رغم أنف امرئ ذكرتَ عنده فلم يصل عليك))
“May a person be disgraced in whose presence you (O Messenger of Allāh ﷺ) are mentioned, yet he does not send blessings upon you.”
3. The saying of the Prophet ﷺ:
((البخيل من ذكرت عنده فلم يصل علي))
“The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned, yet he does not send blessings upon me.”
The Shaykh clarified that this obligation applies ONCE in EACH GATHERING. That is, if the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned multiple times in the same sitting, it is obligatory to send Ṣalāh and Salām upon him at least once. For subsequent mentions, it remains highly recommended but not obligatory.
Furthermore, the Shaykh advised that when the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned during a reminder or lecture, everyone should send Ṣalāh and Salām audibly, provided it does not disturb others. However, if this occurs during the Friday khuṭbah, the khaṭīb should say it aloud, while the congregation should say it QUIETLY to themselves.
