Allāh ﷻ said:
{وَلَا یَغۡتَب بَّعۡضُكُم بَعۡضًاۚ أَیُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمۡ أَن یَأۡكُلَ لَحۡمَ أَخِیهِ مَیۡتࣰا فَكَرِهۡتُمُوهُۚ}
"Do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would despise that! And fear Allāh." [Sūrah Al-Ḥujurāt: 12]
Many of us are cautious of swallowing even a drop of water, fearing it might invalidate our fast. Yet, we show far less concern when it comes to consuming the flesh of our brothers—even though this sin not only ruins our good deeds but also leads to bankruptcy in the Hereafter.
Abu Hurairah (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ once asked:
"Do you know who is truly bankrupt?" The Companions replied: "A bankrupt person among us is one who has neither wealth nor possessions."
The Prophet ﷺ responded:
"The real bankrupt from my Ummah will be one who appears on the Day of Judgment with prayers, fasting, and charity, but he had insulted others, slandered them, unlawfully consumed their wealth, shed blood, and beaten others. As a result, his good deeds will be transferred to those he wronged. If his good deeds are insufficient to repay his injustices, their sins will be placed upon him, and he will be cast into the Hellfire." [Muslim]
Fasting is more than just abstaining from food and drink. If we fail to recognise this, we risk losing its true benefits.
Abu Hurairah (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need for him to abandon his food and drink." [Bukhari]
Let’s reflect: Are we guarding our tongues as diligently as we guard our fasts?
