As we sit down for iftar tonight, let us take a moment to remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their wealth, property, and even their lives so that this religion could reach us. Their sacrifices should inspire us to remain steadfast in our Deen and actively share it with others.
One of the greatest examples of such sacrifice is the historic Battle of Badr.
A Brief Summary:
-> The Battle of Badr took place on the 17th of Ramaḍhān, 2 Hijri.
-> It is named after Badr, a small town 150 km from Madinah, where the battle took place.
-> Initially, the Muslims, led by the Prophet ﷺ, set out to intercept a Quraysh trade caravan returning from Syria, led by Abū Sufyān.
-> Upon learning of this, the Quraysh mobilised an army of 1,000 men to protect their caravan and confront the Muslims.
-> The Prophet ﷺ led a much smaller force of 313-317 men (100 Muhājirs and the rest from the Anṣār), with limited weapons, only two horses, and around 70 camels.
-> The Muslims camped near the wells of Badr, securing access to water as a strategic advantage.
-> The night before the battle, the Prophet ﷺ spent the entire night in du‘ā, earnestly seeking Allāh’s help.
-> Allāh granted the believers peaceful sleep, sent down rain to purify them, and strengthened their resolve.
-> The battle began with a duel between three warriors from each side, ultimately resulting in victory for the believers.
-> Allāh sent angels to assist the Muslims, as mentioned in Sūrah Al-Anfāl (9-12).
-> Despite being outnumbered, the Muslims secured a decisive victory, killing key Quraysh leaders, including Abū Jahl. In total, 70 Quraysh were killed, and 70 were captured.
-> The Muslims had 14 martyrs—6 from the Muhājirūn and 8 from the Ansār.
-> This victory strengthened the Muslim position in Madinah and instilled fear in the Quraysh.
-> The battle was a clear demonstration that victory comes from Allāh alone, not from numbers or resources.
"And you did not kill them, but it was Allāh who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muḥammad], when you threw, but it was Allāh who threw..." [Sūrah Al-Anfāl (8:17)]
