BENEFIT: How to Maximise the Benefits when Listening & Reading

Ibn Ḥazm raḥimahullāh said: «وإذا ورد عليك خطاب بلسان، أو هجمت على كلام في كتاب، فإياك أن تقابله مقابلة المغاضبة الباعثة على المغالبة،قبل أن تتبين بطلانه ببرهان قاطع. وأيضاً، فلا تقبل عليه إقبال المصدق به، المستحسن إياه، قبل علمك بصحته ببرهان قاطع، فتظلم في كلا الوجهين نفسك، وتبعد عن إدراك الحقيقة. ولكن أقبل عليه إقبال سالم القلب عن النزاع عنه، والنزوع إليه، إقبال من يريد حظ نفسه في فهم ما سمع ورأى، فالتزيد به علماً، وقبوله إن كان حسناً، أو رده إن كان خطأ، فمضمون لك إن فعلت ذلك الأجر الجزيل، والحمد الكثير، والفضل العميم» "If you hear some speech, or come across words in a book, beware of reacting with the attitude of anger that drives you to conflict, before verifying its falsity with decisive proof. Similarly, do not approach it with blind acceptance, as one who believes in it and praises it, before confirming its truth with solid evidence. Doing so will cause you to wrong yourself in both cases, distancing you from the pursuit of truth. Instead, approach it with a heart free from dispute or bias, as one who seeks to benefit personally from understanding what they have heard or read, increasing their knowledge, accepting it if it is correct, or rejecting it if it is erroneous.
