BENEFIT: Is a single general repentance sufficient for all sins, or must I repent for each sin separately?

Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allāh have mercy on him, stated: "If one repents with a general repentance (التوبة العامة), this repentance entails the forgiveness of all sins, even if the person does not recall each individual sin. However, this generality may be limited by an opposing factor that necessitates specification, such as if there are certain sins that, had the person recalled them, they would not have repented from due to their strong attachment to those sins or their belief that such actions are good and not reprehensible. Therefore, any sin which the person, if recalled, would not have repented from is excluded from the repentance. On the other hand, any sin which, if recalled specifically, the person would repent from is included within the general repentance. As for ‘unrestricted repentance’ (التوبة المطلقة) which is when a person repents generally without necessarily intending repentance from every specific sin, this type of repentance does not guarantee that every individual sin will be included in the repentance, nor does it prevent their inclusion, similar to an unrestricted statement. However, this type of repentance may serve as a cause for the forgiveness of certain sins, and it may also serve as a cause for the forgiveness of all sins, unlike general repentance, which necessitates general forgiveness as it comprehensively includes all sins."
