BENEFIT 2: Those who already performed ‘Umrah, but have now come to know it is obligatory - does that ‘Umrah suffice the obligation or must they perform another

Sheikh Muḥammad Al-’Ansi ḥafidhahullāh:
If the individual performed ’umrah without explicitly specifying whether it was voluntary or obligatory, it generally suffices. Most people, when performing ’umrah, aim to fulfill the act of ’umrah without delving into whether it is voluntary or obligatory—unless Allāh wills otherwise. This appears to be what is apparent, and Allāh knows best.
As long as the individual has performed ’umrah, correctly and completely, it is hoped, by Allāh’s will, that it will suffice. This is because performing ’umrah fulfills the obligation of ’umrah. There is no voluntary act preceding an obligatory one (generally speaking).
Similarly, the same principle applies to Ḥajj. If an individual performs Ḥajj; this Ḥajj is considered the Ḥajj of Islam (the obligatory Ḥajj). Even if the individual initially labelled it as voluntary, if it was performed correctly and for oneself, it suffices as the Ḥajj of Islam. And Allāh knows best.
